Education Convention

BACKGROUND

Background

The Ministry of Education holds an annual general meeting in the summer, the Education Convention. The convention arose from annual meetings for teachers which was formalized in the 1994 as Annual Teacher Convention. Over the years, the annual meetings became Education Conventions as it added all staff and operations of the ministry and private schools to its roster and then included other stakeholders and interested members of the public.

The gathering and its activities is open to stakeholders and to the general populace who may want to learn about what the schools are doing. Currently it is typically a 3-day event where breakfast and lunch is provided, and attendees attend a lot of varied educational workshops and general sessions. Various other non-educational workshops on topics of interest to educators and parents are also available.

The ministry spends around $10,000 on the event not including staff time. Also there are substantial donations from public officials, businesses and individuals that make the event possible.
